1. Le Petit Train, Artouste – the highest train in Europe– 90 minutes by car. This is a fantastic day out for
the whole family. Take a picnic to eat at the top. Necessary to book in peak periods.
2. Aqua Béarn – outdoor water park – 30 minutes by car. A bit scruffy, but kids love it!! Lots of shade and a snack bar/restaurant. We recommend going on a HOT day, because children do get cold as they’re always wet!!!
3. Aventure Parc – high ropes adventure park - 40 minutes by car. Ideal for children 8+, although there is a mini adventure park for 4+. This is a really good full day out for the whole family (if you like heights!!) in a beautiful setting. We recommend you take a picnic as the food is not great!

4. Horse riding at Lac de Bious-Artigues – 60 minutes by car - picnic in mountains. There is a beautiful 1 hour walk around the lake surrounded by mountains. You can hire ponies/donkeys for the children and lead them yourselves unaccompanied (no need to book) or you can all go for an accompanied ride together (best to book). Warning – there is a steep hill to climb to reach the lake as the parking at the top is very limited and unless you’re there very early (9am), you’ll have to park at the bottom and walk up.
5. Day at beach (60 – 90 mins), Hendaye – easy parking and safe for children, St Jean de Luz – safe but VERY busy and parking difficult, Biarritz – smaller beach and VERY busy, Cap Breton – parking ok but can be BIG waves, Seignosse – closest but longish walk to beach and HUGE waves.
6. Rafting from Navarrenx (Eaux Vives) – half day or day with picnic lunch – need to book ! All participants must be able to swim.
7. Lac de Biron at Orthez – 20 minutes by car – really great restaurant (Grill du Lac) – need to book ! This is a bathing lake with a beach. Charge to go on the beach and there is no shade – take the umbrella. Good for swimming and beach has a life guard. A little play area for younger children, which is well shaded.

8. Gorges de Kakuetta – 60 minutes by car. This is a lovely 60 to 90 minute walk in an enormous gorge - not ideal for very young children as it can be a bit slippery and not accessible to pushchairs, from 3-4 should be ok. Restaurant here is awful – loads of flies. OK to buy an ice cream, but we wouldn’t recommend eating here. Lunch at restaurant in Mauleon or Tardets or picnic and little outdoor swimming pool in Lannes on return journey would make for a good day out.
9. Bear sanctuary “Eco Zoo” at Borce and picnic at Lescun with roaming horses –60 - 90 minutes by car. A lovely day out for children with stunning scenery in the mountains. Speak to us before you go and we will show you on the map where we recommend you go for a picnic.
10. Walk/cycle in pretty mountain village, Arette – 40 minutes by car –with picnic or lunch at little bar/restaurant (between 12 and 2pm – best to ring and check they’re open). Small outdoor pool in Lannes or bigger indoor and outdoor pool with big slide at Oloron on return journey makes a great day out.
